In the original X-Men team, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and appeared for the first time in September 1963, Iceman was the youngest and, in my opinion, most pleasant member, with his
bizarre look of a snowman and the adolescent inclination to the joke. Then, although my preferences were always addressed to other key-figures of the Marvel Universe (not concerning the mutants'
world), I have always had a special liking for Bobby Drake and his super-human abilities. With the passing of time and the deep stylistic changes of the X-Men, the hero underwent a lot of significant
transformations, always mantaining, however, a fundamental role in the graphical impact of the Comics' tables, drawn by many true masters of the House of Ideas.
The market offers various statues devoted to the character in different scales and, among these, it is worth to remind the astonishing Clear version by Bowen Design, masterfully sculpted by
Mark Newman; in my collection, however, a worthy 1:4 statue was missing. For this reason I was particularly happy when, in 2017, Salt and
Peppers produced this amazing 1:4 representation of the character, sculpted by Avi AY and under the art direction of Peter Tabbiche, released in a very limited edition of only 50 samples. The
statue exhibits a dynamic, outstanding pose and is made (for a large part) of a transparent resin, colorless at bottom of the white wake acting as a supporting base and pale-blue colored in the
upper part of the figure. The pose is quite iconic for the character: Iceman stands on an icy spiral (which he usually creates to move quickly) and exhibits a powerful and slender physique, with
the right leg fully bent in support, the left one stretched back and the torso pushed out forward, with the left hand open to create the wake and the right arm elongated back to balance the
body's weight.
The result is an extremely dynamic figure, which strikes for his realistic naturalness and elegance! The use of the transparent resin, of course, is very appropriate for the hero and provides
the whole figure with a breathtaking appeal. The inner bright blue color on torso, the upper part of the arms and the head is beautiful and helps to emphasize the excellent sculpt of the
body, pointing out the muscles' contours on abdomen, biceps and triceps, chest and back; on the contrary, at both hands and feet the resin is colorless, smooth and very transparent. The black
suit on legs is finely texturized and embellished on both sides with a large circular and golden logo of the mutants's team; the same logo appears on the silver buckle of the wide belt at waist,
with a brilliant yellow background which increases the polychromy of the whole. Some blue icy spikes are positioned on shoulders and also on the head, where they act as an original, thick hair of
the character, pointing out the perception of a true man made of ice and giving a modern look to the hero. The spiral wake (resting on a circular pedestal) is very large and realized in a masterful
way: a white, satinized layer covers the top surface and offers an excellent contrast with the many spikes located at bottom, made of trasparent resin; the same spiral ends with a vertical, hexagonal-based
pyramid acting as a connection with the hand of the hero. It is worth noting that the wake is very large and made of full resin; then, it is quite heavy and requires an appropriate space for display.
The face of the hero is simply spectacular and demonstrate both the great talent of AviAy and the great realization care used for this custom piece. The contours of nose, mouth and temples are
pointed out by a clearer and more opaque color which stands out on the bright blue of the background, while two frowned eyebrows emphasize the icy eyes (just marked with a very thin, darker
line), giving an intense and charming gaze to the hero. In conclusion, I believe this Iceman represents one of the best custom produced in the last years and a top-quality collectible of great
charm and aesthetic impact: a true must for all fans of the X-Men and, more in general, of the Marvel Universe.
